Challenge 10 is about being hyperaware of what you are cognitively thinking and choosing to do while you are sketchnoting. The focus of this sketchnote will be to capture how you feel or react when you are asked to do something that is outside of your comfort zone. (If you have never sketchnoted before, you may be out of your comfort zone on already! Please see the 10 Tips to Get Started with Sketchnoting below to help you with some pointers. Feel free to practice doodling for a little while before creating your sketchnote for this challenge.)
Here are the directions for this challenge:
1. Begin by drawing a small- or medium-sized circle or space somewhere on a digital screen (e.g., Paper, Sketchbook Express) or blank piece of paper and label the circle: My Comfort Zone.
2. Reflect on a question, such as: what will I draw inside the circle/shape that visually represents my comfort zone as a learner? (Note: the question can be broad, or can include a specific ending, such as …as a learner of music? …leader of a new initiative?) When you are ready, begin drawing images using either your app’s digital tools or analog sketching resources (e.g., colored pencils, crayons, pens, erasers).
3. For the next step, pose this question to yourself: what magical moments have happened (or perceive will happen) when I push myself to go outside of my comfort zone as a learner? (If extending the question, include the specific focus: …as a learner of music? …leader of a new initiative?) When you are ready, write the question on your screen or paper and add details to your sketchnote by doodling your responses using drawings and/or text. Here is an example done by Silvia:
4. Record your signature and date somewhere on your sketchnote. Save your sketchnote and, if necessary, export to be able to access when writing your blog post.
5. Now it is time to reflect on what you were cognitively thinking while you were thinking while drawing during the first four steps:
- Why did you choose the shapes, objects, frames, text style, drawings, and placement of information to convey your ideas and intended message?
- What were you thinking about while you were doodling that caused you to connect your past experiences to future experiences?
6. Once you feel you can answer the two questions, begin to write your blog post: a) embed your sketchnote appropriately, and b) include a short narrative expressing the thinking process you went through to create your sketchnote.
7. Title, save, and publish your post.
